VMAs 2020: De highlights
Vannacht was het eindelijk zover: de Video Music Awards 2020, live vanuit New York City, VS. De setlist van de show was niet te min: onder andere Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Miley Cyrus, BTS, The Weeknd en meer grootheden betraden het VMA-podium in deze tijd waarin we wel een beetje muziek kunnen gebruiken. De grote winnaar van de avond was Lady Gaga, die vijf awards in de wacht sleepte. The Weeknd won de grote prijs 'Video of the Year'. Heb je de VMAs gemist? Winnaars
Lady Gaga won onder andere awards in de categorie 'Artist of the Year' en 'Collaboration of the Year' met de hit 'Rain On Me'. Naast de award voor 'Video of the Year' mag The Weeknd ook een beeldje voor 'Best R&B' aan zijn collectie toevoegen. De Moon Person voor beste videoclip werd in de wacht gesleept door Ariana Grande en Justin Bieber voor hun track 'Stuck With U'. Dit jaar was er daarnaast een speciale categorie in het leven geroepen: beste quarantaineoptreden – de winst hiervan ging naar CNCO. De VMA voor beste regie (van 'The Man') ging naar niemand minder dan Taylor Swift. BTS ging naar huis met awards voor 'Best K-Pop', 'Best Pop', 'Best Group' en 'Best Choreography'. H.E.R. won de 'Video For Good'-award met het nummer 'I Can't Breathe'. Hieronder kun je de hele lijst met winnaars vinden.
Show
Deze editie van de Video Music Awards, gepresenteerd door Keke Palmer, werd opgedragen aan Chadwick Boseman, de acteur uit onder andere 'Black Panther' die afgelopen week kwam te overlijden op 43-jarige leeftijd. De optredens vonden plaats op verschillende plekken in New York, waarvan het vooraf een geheim was waar dit zou zijn. In een minstens negen minuten lang durende performance nam Lady Gaga ons mee naar de wereld van 'Chromatica' waarbij ook Ariana Grande het podium betrad om samen met de Queen of Pop 'Rain On Me' te vertolken. Fun fact: Miley Cyrus zat op een disco wrecking ball toen ze haar nummer 'Midnight Sky' vertolkte. BTS stond daarnaast voor het eerst op het VMA-podium dit jaar en gaf een iconisch optreden met hun track 'Dynamite'. Ook Black Eyed Peas, The Weeknd, Doja Cat, Machine Gun Kelly, Chloe x Halle, Tate McRae, Jack Harlow gaven een optreden weg tijdens het event.
